Soma (no, sorry, it doesn't even vaguely resemble the fictional drug in Huxley's Brave New World -- it simply means 'somatic,' meaning 'body' effects) is a non-scheduled drug sometimes prescribed as a muscle relaxant. The attraction, for those of us who don't have skeleto-muscular problems, is that after about an hour or so it metabolizes into meprobamate. Before benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, etc.) were synthesized and thoroughly researched, doctors used to prescribe meprobamate (brand names Miltown, Equanil, and others) as a sedative, sleeping pill, or anxiolitic.

Because it is highly addictive and less effective as an anxiolitic than the benzos, it's almost never prescribed anymore. But it's a nice high for those occasions when it's been a hard day and you just wanna be sedated without having to use that evil television. It will put you to sleep after a while, so it's not a partying drug like other sedative-hypnotics such as methaqualone (Quaaludes, Mandrax, Sopor). Give it a while to kick in, then enjoy the mellow. Don't use it every day for a long time.
