Stopping Smoking Without Trying
Bupropion
Citation:   CK Jaxun. "Stopping Smoking Without Trying: An Experience with Bupropion (exp111954)". Erowid.org. May 30, 2018. erowid.org/exp/111954

DOSE:
  smoked Tobacco - Cigarettes (daily)
    oral Alcohol (daily)
300 mg oral Pharms - Bupropion (daily)
BODY WEIGHT: 150 lb
I have smoked cigarettes (nicotine) for about 20 years, at a rate of two packs per week. A year ago I was prescribed bupropion by a psychiatrist for treatment of depression. About six months ago my dose was increased from 150 mg per day to 300 mg per day). I was also prescribed naltrexone to reduce my alcohol abuse. My symptoms of depression are somewhat better, and my alcohol use has decreased.

However, I had an unexpected and unintentional GOOD 'side effect' from the bupropion (perhaps in combination with the naltrexone?). My smoking has decreased radically to 2 or 3 cigarettes per day, without even trying to cut back. I no longer have a 'physical' urge to smoke. I can literally take it or leave it at any given time, without feeling any nicotine withdrawal symptoms. My desire to smoke is now purely psychological, mostly based on my habit of smoking while driving.

I suppose it's no surprise that bupropion is marketed as a smoking-cessation drug under its brand names (Zyban and Wellbutrin).
